Recently returned from a 6 month voluntary stay in Cameroon, West Africa.
I worked with united action for children (UAC)a local, non-profit Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO)in Buea up the slopes of Mount Cameroon.

I spent my days working in the nursery + Primary school section with tiny children of 2 years through to the current eldest class age 6. Our focus was to stimulate learning through play and encourage all important skills, alongside the academics being taught in the 'learn by rate' classroom.

During my time I used my previous experience in youth work to help set up UAC Youth Club. This time focusing on those aged 13-20 years, bringing older youths into the success of UAC Creating a 'safe, constructive, creative invironment'to give access to affordable skillful leisure activities.

Learning can take place outside the classroom and be fun.

Many thanks to all those from the Limerick Association whose generous support meant I was able to purchase sports equipment and contribute to a budget for the Youth Club to ensure it's sustainability in years to come...

Memories of growing up in Bruree

Bruree, a place steeped in history, was one of the seats for the kings of Munster from ancient times until around the end of the 12th century. The King of Cashel used to send gifts to the King of Bruree. These gifts varied from animals to slaves. According to O'Halloran Bruree was also the place where Irish bards met twice a year until 1746

Denis Barron has just finished writing his "Memories of growing up in Bruree", Co. Limerick,

Margaret (Peg) Fealy

Athea Co. Limerick

9th June 1923 - 8th July 2006

It was with great sadness that the Fealy girls had to cope with the death of their beloved mother Margaret (Peg) Fealy.  Peg was a wonderful woman and no one could have asked for a better mother.

Peg came to England from Athea, County Limerick in 1952 and has lived here ever since, marrying Michael Fealy in St Gregory's Church, Bearwood and rasing their four daughters Mary, Bridget, Margaret and Joanna.

Peg was a staunch supporter of the Limerick Association in Birmingham attending most of their functions and Dances. The Limerick Association put forward their deepest sympathy to the family of Peg.

Peg was admitted to the Queen Elizabeth hospital on 25th of June to undergo surgical treatment for bowel cancer. Due to complications, which arose after the operations, which saw Peg fighting very courageously overcome some very trying circumstances, she finally lost the battle on 8th July and died peacefully, surounded by her loving girls.

In line with Peg’s love of music and song, her profound dedication to her Irish roots the family held a funeral, which she would have been proud of. Pegs nephews, cousins and friends arrived from Ireland to attend the funeral and the traditional Irish ways of shouldering the coffin from the church and also from the hearse to the graveside was a refreshing sight to see. It gave poignancy to the funeral, which will take a long time to leave our thoughts.

The girls held a ‘Hooley’ at the British Legion Club in Harborne, which again gave great reverence to Peg’s love of music and traditional values. We all came away with fantastic memories of this lovely lady.

A collection was made at the church services for the Fireside Centre in Birmingham and it was with great pride that £440 was presented to Sister Sabina, (originally from Adare in Co. Limerick) towards her work with the homeless and needy in the City. We know that Sister Sabina will put this money to very good use.

The family of Margaret (Peg) would like to express their gratitude and thanks for everything that has been done for them during this very said time. For all the sympathy and Mass cards which have been received and for all the kindness that has been bestowed on them.

This lady may have passed away but it will take a very long time before she is forgotten.
